Hands off Horton Cropped

On Saturday 30 July 2016, a demonstration took place in support of Horton maternity services in Banbury. Over 400 people turned up to show their support for the maternity unit and stand against proposals to downgrade it to a midwife only unit.

The demonstration took place following an announcement by Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust, which said that unless a number of middle grade obstetric staff are appointed to the Horton maternity unit by September, it will cease to exist in its current form.

Saturday’s demonstration saw hundreds of people turn out in support of the Horton, with cross-party representatives, the campaign group Keep the Horton General (KTHG) and many families who have had their babies at the Horton.

Victoria commented: “I was thrilled to see so many people turn out in support of our much-loved hospital. The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was lovely to see so many ‘Horton babies’ join in the demonstration, showing just how important our local hospital is for all of us. The maternity unit is a vital lifeline for hundreds of families in Banbury, Bicester, and Brackley, the surrounding villages and beyond- we must continue to work hard to prevent a downgrade of its services.”

KTHG will be planning a number of campaign events over the next few weeks in support of the Horton. These events will culminate in a ‘Hands Around Our Horton’ event on Sunday August 21 of which further details will be published soon.
