I know from correspondence with constituents that many are frustrated by delays at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). As with all public services, DVLA was severely impacted by the pandemic. As an organisation which receives more than 60,000 items of mail every single day, this understandably caused a backlog.
To help tackle this, I understand that the DVLA has introduced additional online services, recruited more staff, increased overtime working and secured extra office space in Swansea and Birmingham. I also know that the DVLA has reconfigured its accommodation to safely maximise the number of staff on site and is working hard to process paper applications as quickly as possible.
I am assured that these measures are having a positive impact. I understand that in March of this year, the total number of paper applications awaiting processing at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) was 898,673. This is a significant reduction from the peak of 1.6 million in September last year.
