This summer marks the 150th Anniversary of the Palace of Westminster. Home to the House of Commons and the House of Lords, Westminster is a symbol of British Government and democracy.
To celebrate this milestone, Parliament is offering several online activities for you to take part in. Speaker of the House Sir Lindsey Hoyle is running a ‘My Democracy Design’ competition, inviting young artists to design a democracy themed tile. The competition is open for kids aged 6 – 15 and applications close on 31 August.
For those interested in finding out about and exploring the history of the UK Parliament, there are free online talks and virtual tours of Westminster.
Later this year in the first week of November, UK Parliament Week allows citizens to get involved and speak about issues that are important to them. It is also the chance to learn about how, in the 150 years since the Palace of Westminster’s completion, citizens have campaigned for change and made a difference.
Victoria Prentis expressed her excitement for this landmark anniversary, stating “It is fantastic that a building steeped in such history is being celebrated for its 150th Anniversary. It has always been such a privilege to work here and I hope people take advantage of the brilliant online activities available”.
