I appreciate that the situation at JDE Banbury is not easy for all those who work there. JDE have been very good at briefing me about their proposed changes. My understanding is that part of the plans include moving from six shift patterns to two and resetting other terms and conditions such as simplifying pay grades and offering a fair reward system for all associates. There is a role for everyone; the proposals do not include any redundancies within the manufacturing unit. Having asked for an update on the situation following a number of emails from concerned constituents in the past week, I am told that nobody has been issued with a notice of dismissal and re-engagement (referred to as “fire and rehire”) at this time. Collective and individual consultation continues; the hope is that there can be constructive engagement in the formal process over the coming days and weeks.
I will continue to follow progress closely. Ultimately, however, it is entirely a commercial decision which does limit my involvement. Terms and conditions of employment are a matter for employers and employees. I would encourage all those affected to engage with negotiations at every available opportunity.
